Break-Through into the Earth's History,
or Drilling the Bottom of Lake Baikal
Drilling the bottom of lake Baikal was reported to have been undertaken
from an ice platform. The amazing findings were published to have been
found, as it is said in the paper by M.I.Kuzmin, the Director of the
Geochemical Institute of the Siberian Department of the Russian Academy
of Sciences, the city of Irkutsk, in Siberian Electronic Magazine (# 37,
September, 2000). M.I.Kuzmin suggested also an idea to organize an
international expedition to examine precipitations in the deepest lake
of the world. It is for the first time that 600 m cut was made in Baikal
bottom ground being indicative of the past 10 millions of years of the
terrestrial history. Given is a fragment of the account on the procedure.
"January 24, 25.
The ground character is ever unchanged. Terrigenical clays are alternating
with diatomite ones. The cut is surpisingly invariable which indicates to
the fact that the lake has been persistently under the same conditions,
very close to its contemporary state, for an incredible period of time.
It was a real surprise for many investigators to find the same diatomite,
the same clays in 5 mln year immutable cut. Actually, one may but wonder
to have such a phenomenon in nature. As far back as the last century the
Earth's history was not thought to be estimated more than some millions
of years. Drilling in the modern active regions similar to those in Baikal
is sure to give the most interesting, astonishing results. It is no mere
chance that ocean drilling proved to be a real overturn in our knowledge
on the planet Earth.
