First Thermonuclear Reactor Is Under Way in Russia
A project of the
world's first International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) was
submitted for consideration to the Russian Academy of Sciences by the
Ministry of Atomic Research on 7 June, 2001. An ITER for atomic power
stations is reported to have been worked out on the base of an original
technological concept for producing electric energy: it will, for the
first time, use thermonuclear energy accumulated by plasmas in
magnetically confined traps. Nuclear elements are to produce much larger
output of energy, that is, much greater efficiency of a reactor in
progress. The ITER project has been developed by scientists from Russia,
European Community, USA, Canada, and Kazakhstan.
